Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine Replacement Cost: Is It Worth It?
Last updated on October 19th, 2026 at 03:34 am
A Jeep Grand Cherokee engine replacement usually costs about $6,000 to $12,000 installed for the 3.6L V6 or 5.7L HEMI, according to a November 2025 price guide, and a May 2026 engine seller puts a Pentastar swap in a 2011–2021 model at $7,500 to $10,500. The 3.0L EcoDiesel runs far higher, roughly $13,000 to $18,000 or more.
It is worth doing when the installed quote plus any other repairs stays under about half of what the Jeep is worth running and the rest of the vehicle is sound. Before paying, check the VIN for recalls, because a few WK2 engine problems are fixed free.
The calculator and decision tool below use only the dated, sourced figures in the tables, so you can see where every number comes from.
What does a Grand Cherokee engine replacement cost installed?
Four sources publish installed or near-installed totals for this job. They disagree, and the table shows why. Prices were checked on October 17, 2026.
| Source | Date | Scope | Installed total | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HelpfulFix | Nov 11, 2025 | 3.6L Pentastar | $6,000–$12,000 | Used, reman or Mopar crate; 16–24 labor hours at $110–$176 per hour |
| HelpfulFix | Nov 11, 2025 | 5.7L HEMI / 6.4L SRT | $6,500–$11,000 / $9,000–$14,000+ | 5.7L priced with a reman long block |
| HelpfulFix | Nov 11, 2025 | 3.0L EcoDiesel | $13,000–$18,000+ independent, $20,000–$26,000 dealer | Reman long block about $10,000 in parts alone |
| PowerEngines (engine seller) | May 19, 2026 | Pentastar 3.6L in a WK2 | $7,500–$10,500 | Year-mismatched swaps add $2,000–$5,000 |
| JeepCorner | Updated Feb 3, 2026 | 2011–2021 engines | Headline $2,000–$8,000 | Its table lists engine prices only ($2,500–$4,200) and says labor is extra |
| CarBrain | Updated Sep 20, 2024 | 2012–2016 / 2017–present | $4,000–$6,000 / $4,500–$7,500 | Intro text refers to CR-V generations; its split does not match the 2011–2021 WK2 run |
Dealer quotes run higher. PowerEngines puts dealer labor 30 to 60 percent above an independent shop, and HelpfulFix lists EcoDiesel dealer totals of $20,000 to $26,000.
The low outliers are the ones that leave something out. JeepCorner’s headline says it includes labor, but its table does not, and CarBrain’s page appears to be adapted from a Honda article. The higher totals from HelpfulFix and PowerEngines itemize engine, labor and extras, which is how a real shop quote reads.
Engine price by type and source

The engine itself is the biggest line. Used, remanufactured and new crate engines differ in price and in warranty, and most of the spread in the totals above comes from this choice.
Ask every seller and shop to quote the same way: engine source, warranty length, core charge, labor hours, shop rate and extras. That makes quotes comparable.
| Engine | Type | Price (engine only) | Source and date | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6L Pentastar | Used | $3,400–$4,900 | HelpfulFix, Nov 2025 | Verify miles, compression and VIN |
| 3.6L Pentastar | Reman | $3,300–$4,500 | HelpfulFix, Nov 2025 | Aftermarket reman long block |
| 3.6L Pentastar | Reman | $5,145 | Powertrain Company, Oct 17, 2026 | Lists 2014–2015 Grand Cherokee fitment; $670 core charge if you have no core |
| 3.6L Pentastar | Reman | $6,099 | Powertrain Company, Oct 17, 2026 | Lists 2016–2024 Grand Cherokee fitment; $485 core charge |
| 3.6L Pentastar | Mopar crate | $4,800–$6,800 | HelpfulFix, Nov 2025 | Usually the strongest warranty |
| 5.7L HEMI | Reman | $3,600–$5,000 | HelpfulFix, Nov 2025 | Reman long block |
| 5.7L HEMI | Reman | $3,999 | Powertrain Company and Powertrain Products, Oct 17, 2026 | Sale prices; list $4,740.75 and $4,499. Fitment 2010–2012 and 2013–2017 Grand Cherokee. Core charge $570 on the first |
| 6.4L SRT | Reman or new long block | $6,000–$8,000 | HelpfulFix, Nov 2025 | Used price not sourced |
| 3.0L EcoDiesel | Reman long block | $9,999–$14,516 | HelpfulFix (Nov 2025) and Powertrain Company (Oct 17, 2026) | The second listing is for Ram 1500 fitment with the same 3.0L; core $575–$1,150 |
| Any Jeep (all engines) | Used | $1,800–$4,000 | PowerEngines, May 2026 | Warranty 30–90 days, catastrophic failure only |
| Any Jeep (all engines) | Reman long block | $3,500–$6,500 | PowerEngines, May 2026 | Warranty typically 12–36 months |
| Any Jeep (all engines) | New crate | $5,500–$9,500 | PowerEngines, May 2026 | Availability limited on older engines |
Core charges are easy to miss. Powertrain Company lists $485 to $670 on the gas engines above if you have no core to return, and PowerEngines lists $400 to $1,200 on reman units, refundable when the old engine comes back.
Grand Cherokee engine replacement cost calculator
Pick the engine and where it comes from, set the labor hours and shop rate, and tick the extras your quote includes. The result is a range built from the two tables above and the labor and extras figures below them.
Use it to check a quote rather than replace one, because it cannot know your shop or your Jeep.
What else goes on the bill
Labor hours and rate
HelpfulFix lists 16 to 24 hours of labor for a 3.6L long-block replacement and some shops quoting more for 4WD, at a $110 to $176 hourly range with about $143 as the national average. PowerEngines puts labor on a same-family swap at $1,500 to $3,000 at independent shops and 30 to 60 percent more at a dealer.
Neither source is a flat-rate manual, and no free book time for the 2011–2021 3.6L or 5.7L could be found. Ask the shop for its labor hours in writing.
Parts that should go in with the engine
PowerEngines lists these as the usual extras, with May 2026 prices:
- Motor mounts: $80–$300
- Water pump and thermostat: $150–$400
- Timing components if not included with the engine: $200–$600. Used engines do not include them
- Hoses and clamps: $80–$250
- Oil, coolant and filter: $80–$200
- Freight on the engine: $250–$450
- Core charge on reman units, refundable when the old engine comes back: $400–$1,200
- Shop diagnostic time before the quote: $100–$200
- Tow in: $100–$300 each way
- Emissions rework in CARB states: $200–$700 where it applies
HelpfulFix lumps fluids, filters, gaskets, belts, mounts and hardware at $300 to $1,200, which is consistent.
Programming, immobilizer and VIN matching
Most pages on this topic skip the electronics. The PowerEngines wiring and ECU guide says a same-year, same-family replacement usually accepts the existing ECU without reprogramming, then adapts over the first few hundred miles. Across model years the ECU may need a flash at a dealer or equipped shop.
If a different ECU goes in, the immobilizer may need to be re-paired, which is typically dealer or specialty-shop work. No source gives a price for this, so the calculator has a box where you enter the figure from your own quote.
Match the engine to your VIN and casting numbers before buying. The Powertrain listings above all tell buyers to verify fitment, and the 3.6L and 5.7L families changed between 2011 and 2018.
Check the VIN for recalls before paying for an engine
Federal recall data shows several engine failures on this generation that the manufacturer fixes free. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and also ask a dealer about open campaigns, because some notices say parts were not yet available. These come from the NHTSA recall database.
| Campaign | Engine and years | Problem | Remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11V487 | 2012 Grand Cherokee with 3.6L, built Aug 31–Sep 13, 2011 | Connecting rod bearing failure from debris in the block, which can seize the engine | Replace the engine free of charge |
| 20V475 and 23V411 | 3.0L diesel: 2014–2016 (20V475), 2014–2020 (23V411) | Crankshaft position sensor tone wheel can delaminate and stall the engine | Free software update so the engine keeps running on the camshaft signal |
| 20V699 | 3.0L EcoDiesel, 2014–2019 | EGR cooler can crack and let vaporized coolant burn in the intake manifold | Free EGR cooler replacement and manifold inspection; the notice says parts were not available at the time |
| 22V406 | 3.0L diesel, 2014–2020 | High-pressure fuel pump failure can send debris through the fuel system | Free pump replacement and inspection of other fuel parts |
| 22V284 | 2021 Grand Cherokee WK with 3.6L | EGR valve can stick open and cause loss of drive power | Free EGR valve replacement |
A dealer can confirm whether a campaign is still open for your VIN. Recalls cover only the vehicles named in each campaign, so most failed engines are not recall cases.
Is it the engine? Cheaper repairs to rule out first

Have a shop pull codes, run a compression or leak-down test and check the oil and coolant for metal or mixing before anyone quotes a swap. A failed sensor or a cooling problem is not an engine replacement.
For scale, RepairPal lists a Grand Cherokee cylinder head replacement at $3,012 to $3,499 and RepairPal lists a camshaft replacement at $1,172 to $1,545, both updated September 3, 2026 and excluding taxes and fees. RepairPal does not publish a full engine swap price for this model.
If the Jeep overheated first, read why a Jeep keeps overheating, and if it just will not start, start with the Grand Cherokee no-start checks. A tick that might be valvetrain is covered in the Jeep ticking noise guide.
Repair, replace or sell the Grand Cherokee?

The usual rule of thumb is that a repair is no longer worth it once it reaches about half of the vehicle’s current market value. CarBrain (April 2020) and MyCarQuest (July 2026) both give 50 percent, and MyCarQuest adds that age, mileage, repair history and safety also matter.
Use the value of the Jeep running, from a valuation site, not what it is worth with a dead engine. Include any other repairs you already know it needs.
Repair-or-sell decision tool
Enter your numbers and the tool applies the 50 percent rule and the checks from the flowchart.
The tool treats the 50 percent rule as a guide, not a law. A rare, well-kept Grand Cherokee can justify a higher share, and a rusty one cannot justify any.
Selling as-is is a real option. Used-car buyers such as CarBrain advertise offers on Grand Cherokees with blown engines, so get a few offers to compare with the repair total.
Engine specs for choosing a replacement
These are the manufacturer’s 2014 model-year ratings from the Stellantis media release for the 2014 Grand Cherokee. Earlier and later years differ, so confirm against the window sticker or the owner’s manual for your VIN.
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Max towing (2014) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 | 290 hp | 260 lb-ft | 6,200 lb |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 | 360 hp | 390 lb-ft | 7,400 lb |
| 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 | 240 hp | 420 lb-ft | 7,400 lb |
Towing ratings depend on drivetrain and equipment, and a replacement engine should match the original family and year range.
FAQs
Published estimates run about $6,000 to $12,000 installed for the 3.6L V6 and $6,500 to $11,000 for the 5.7L HEMI (HelpfulFix, Nov 2025), with the EcoDiesel at $13,000 to $18,000 or more. PowerEngines (May 2026) puts a WK2 Pentastar swap at $7,500 to $10,500. Get a written quote, because these are estimates.
HelpfulFix lists 16 to 24 hours for a 3.6L long-block replacement, with some shops quoting more for 4WD. No free flat-rate manual time was found, so ask the shop for its figure.
A used engine costs less up front but PowerEngines lists typical warranties of 30 to 90 days. Remanufactured engines cost more and typically carry 12 to 36 months of warranty, so the warranty terms tell you more than the price does.
No. Federal law, 49 U.S.C. 32703, prohibits resetting or altering an odometer to change the mileage it shows. Keep the receipt for the replacement engine as proof of its mileage and warranty.
PowerEngines says a same-year, same-family replacement usually works with the existing ECU, while a swap across model years may need a flash, and a different ECU can require immobilizer re-pairing. Ask your shop which applies before you buy.
