Rooftop Tent Weight Limit Calculator: Dynamic vs Static

A rooftop tent has to pass two checks: the driving (dynamic) load against the lowest rating in the chain, and the parked (static) load with people inside. Rhino-Rack’s published figures for a Jeep Wrangler JK 4-door hardtop show why it matters: its track mount allows 99 lb of cargo on paved roads and 66 lb on unsealed roads, so a 120-lb tent fails both before you add any gear. Enter your own vehicle, rack and tent ratings below to see where you stand.

Rooftop tent weight limit calculator

Rooftop tent and roof rack weight check: driving (dynamic) and parked (static) loads against your ratings. All weights in pounds. The values shown are examples; replace them with the ratings from your own manuals.

Ratings (from your manuals and rack or tent maker)

Owner's manual, usually under roof rack or luggage rack. Includes the rack unless the manual says otherwise.

The rack maker's published rating for the bars, feet and fit kit. The lowest-rated part sets the limit.

Leave empty to use Thule's guideline of 3 times the dynamic rating. That guideline is Thule's, for Thule racks.

How it works

The vehicle maker sets how much weight the roof can carry while driving. As Thule explains, that dynamic load limit is specified by the manufacturer, a rooftop tent and its racks must stay within it, and the static load (the weight the vehicle supports standing still, with people sleeping in the tent) is significantly higher. Thule’s tent guide adds that the lowest-capacity part of the rack system sets the limit and that as a guideline the static capacity of Thule roof racks is 3 times the dynamic capacity.

Driving check. Rack + tent + gear is compared with the vehicle roof rating (Rhino-Rack’s instructions describe the roof allowance as inclusive of the rack’s own weight). Tent + gear (or rack + tent + gear, if you say the rack rating includes the rack) is compared with the rack’s dynamic rating. For unsealed roads the rack rating is divided by 1.5, the factor in Rhino-Rack’s crossbar instructions: “when these roof racks are to be used on a vehicle that is driven off sealed roads the maximum load rating must be divided by 1.5.” The same instructions say to always use the lower of the vehicle and rack figures.

Parked check. Rack + tent + gear + people is compared with the rack’s static rating (or 3 times its dynamic rating if you leave it empty, per Thule’s guideline). If you enter the tent’s own static rating, the weight of people and bedding is compared with it too. Thule’s tent guide says its tents should not go on clamp-style or edge-style racks, because the high static weight may damage the roof, and that vehicles with glass or panoramic roofs need the vehicle maker’s confirmation first.

We did not list a Wrangler factory roof limit: we could not open Jeep’s own owner’s manual page for it, and the figure varies by model year and body style. Look up yours in the “roof luggage rack” section of your owner’s manual. These are examples of how ratings are published, not a recommendation of any rack.

Weight changes more than roof limits: heavier loads up high also change handling. Read your approach, departure and breakover angles after a lift or tires, and see which tires fit a JL without a lift.

FAQ

What is the difference between dynamic and static load?

Dynamic load is the weight allowed on the roof while the vehicle is moving. Static load is what the roof system supports while parked, for example with people in a rooftop tent. Thule notes that static capacity is significantly higher than dynamic.

Which rating do I use if my vehicle and rack disagree?

The lower one. Rhino-Rack’s instructions say to refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook for maximum carrying capacity and always use the lower of the two figures (source).
