Every Jeep Wrangler JL with the 2.0L turbo or the 3.6L V6 takes 5 quarts of engine oil with a new filter, in every owner's manual from 2018 to 2026. The 6.4L 392 takes 7.5 quarts of 0W-40, and the 3.0L EcoDiesel takes 9 quarts. Coolant is the number that moved: the 2018 and 2021 manuals list 10.3 quarts (2.0L) and 11.2 quarts (3.6L), while the 2024 and 2026 manuals list 12 and 13.4 quarts.
Jeep doesn't publish quart figures for the axles, transfer case or transmissions in the owner's manual. For those you fill to a level, and the rules are below with the fluid each one takes.
Wrangler JL fluid capacity chart, manual by manual
Most capacity charts online give one number for "2018 and up" and never say where it came from. The table below keeps each owner's manual edition in its own column, so you can see which figures stayed put and which changed.

I built this table from those four owner's manuals, all downloaded from Mopar's own vehicleinfo site. I couldn't get a direct copy of the 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 or 2025 manuals, so those years have no column of their own. Their numbers are not guessed.
Two oddities are worth knowing. The 2018 manual gives two fuel figures for the 2-door (18.5 and 17.5 gallons) without saying which applies, and later manuals list only 17.5. The 2021 manual we checked doesn't list the 392 or the 4xe at all, so their first figures here come from the 2024 edition.
JL Fluid Finder: capacities and fluid types for your Jeep
Pick your model year and engine to get a shopping list: how much oil and coolant, and which fluid each part of the driveline takes. For a year with its own manual in the table, the tool shows that manual's figure. For an in-between year it compares the editions on either side and tells you when they disagree.
The tool uses only the figures in the table above and the fluid types from the same manuals' Fluids and Lubricants pages. It doesn't know your exact options, such as the eTorque mild hybrid or your rear axle model, so check the build sheet or ask a dealer to look up your VIN when a line depends on them.
Why the 3.6L JL takes 5 quarts, not 6
It's easy to pour 6 quarts into a Pentastar out of habit, because that's what the JK needed. The 2017 JK user guide lists 6 quarts for its 3.6L. The JL's upgraded Pentastar holds one quart less.

Mopar sent a parts tech tip about it. Tech tip 9004257 (May 6, 2020, filed with NHTSA) says that on a JL, JT, DT or RU with the 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade engine, the engine oil capacity is 5 quarts. It names 2019–2020 JLs, and every JL manual in our table says the same.
The safe routine is simple. Put in 5 quarts with the new filter, drive until the engine is fully warm, then read the dipstick on level ground. Jeep says the best time is about five minutes after a fully warmed-up engine is shut off (2024 manual, p. 292). Top up only to the full mark.

Oil grade by engine
- 2.0L turbo: SAE 5W-30 full synthetic. The 2018 manual asks for API SN PLUS; the 2021 and later manuals ask for API SP/GF-6A.
- 3.6L V6: SAE 0W-20 to Jeep's material standard MS-6395. The 2021 manual also tells you to check the grade printed on the oil filler cap.
- 6.4L V8 (392): SAE 0W-40 full synthetic to MS-A0921, and 91-octane premium fuel only.
- 3.0L EcoDiesel: 5W-40 synthetic to MS-12991 with the API SN category, per the 2021 manual.
JL coolant capacity went up in the 2024 manual
Coolant is where the online charts go most wrong. One widely linked parts-store chart lists 9.9 quarts (2.0L) and 10.7 quarts (3.6L), numbers that match none of the four manuals. Another site applies the 2024 figure of 13.4 quarts to every 3.6L JL since 2018.

Jeep's manuals don't explain the change, so don't read anything into it beyond this: buy for the larger number if you own a 2022 or later JL and aren't sure which applies.
The coolant type has not changed. Every edition calls for Mopar 10 Year/150,000 Mile OAT coolant meeting MS.90032. The manuals warn against mixing it with HOAT or "globally compatible" coolant, and against propylene glycol coolant. If a non-OAT coolant goes in during an emergency, the system needs a drain, flush and refill.
The 2024 maintenance plan says to flush and replace the engine, intercooler, power electronics and battery coolant at 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. On a 4xe, the manual marks the hybrid battery and power electronics loops for authorized dealer service. If you need OAT coolant, look for Mopar 10 Year/150,000 Mile OAT antifreeze on Amazon and confirm the MS.90032 rating on the jug.
Axles, transfer case and transmission: fill to a level
The JL owner's manuals list the fluid type for each driveline part but no capacity. Instead, they tell you how to check the level, which is what actually matters when you refill.

- Front and rear axles: with the Jeep level and supported by the axles, the gear oil should sit about ⅛ in (3 mm) below the bottom edge of the fill hole. Add lubricant only at the fill hole.
- Manual transmission: the fluid should sit between the bottom of the fill hole and no more than 3/16 in (4.76 mm) below it.
- Automatic transmission: there's no dipstick. Jeep says the level is set at the factory and a dealer checks it with special tools if you see a leak or a shifting problem.
- Transfer case: ATF+4 through the fill hole. Our Wrangler transfer case fluid guide covers the change schedule, how much ATF+4 to buy and the drain-and-fill steps.
Those levels come from the 2024 manual's servicing section (pp. 304–305). They're the rule to follow even if you have a quart figure from somewhere else.
Which gear oil goes in which axle
The front axle takes 75W-85 GL-5 in every edition. The rear depends on the axle. In the 2021, 2024 and 2026 manuals, the M200 rear axle (sales code DRZ) takes 75W-140 GL-5, while the M220 rear (codes DRE or DRF) takes 75W-85 GL-5, plus a friction modifier if it has a Trac-Lok limited slip.
The 2018 manual lists 75W-85 for both axles with no M200 split. Some aftermarket charts still say 80W-90 for JL axles, which no JL manual we checked recommends. Your axle's sales code is on the build sheet, and a dealer can pull it from the VIN. For the common front axle and M220 rear, Mopar 75W-85 gear and axle lubricant on Amazon is the factory fluid.
| Axle (as listed in the spec data) | Approximate fill |
|---|---|
| Front, 186 | 1.82 pt (0.86 L) |
| Front, 210 | 2.18 pt (1.03 L) |
| Rear, 200 | 2.43 pt (1.15 L) |
| Rear, 220 with electronic locker | 3.06 pt (1.45 L) |
Use those pint figures only to decide how many bottles to buy, then fill to the ⅛-inch level. Both lists date from 2019–2020, so a later axle may differ slightly.
Regearing for bigger tires means opening both axles, so it's a natural time for fresh gear oil of the right grade. If you're still choosing a ratio, the regear calculator for bigger tires shows the ratio that brings your cruising RPM back to stock.
After a deep water crossing: check fluids before the next drive
Jeep's rule is specific. The 2024 manual (p. 199) says that after crossing any water higher than the bottom of the axle differentials, you should inspect all of the vehicle's fluids for signs of water ingestion. It also says to keep crossings to 5 mph or less.
A milky or foamy look on a dipstick or at a fill plug is the usual sign that water got in. For the manual transmission, the manual says fluid contaminated with water should be changed immediately. Check the axles and transfer case at their fill plugs the same way.
Before you drop in, the water crossing depth checker tests a crossing against the fording rules in the Jeep, Ford and Toyota manuals. If the engine stalls mid-crossing, don't restart it; the hydrolock guide covers what to check first.
Off-road use and towing also count as severe service. The 2024 maintenance plan schedules front and rear axle fluid changes for vehicles used off-road or for frequent trailer towing, and manual transmission fluid changes for towing and heavy loads. If you pull a camper, check the Wrangler towing capacity by year too, because towing near the limit is exactly when those intervals apply.
What to have on hand for a full JL fluid service
- 5 quarts of the correct engine oil grade (7.5 for a 392, 9 for the diesel) and a filter that meets SAE/USCAR-36, which is the standard the manuals name.
- OAT coolant meeting MS.90032: buy for the larger figure from the table if you aren't sure of your edition.
- 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil, plus 75W-140 if your rear axle is the M200, and a friction modifier for a Trac-Lok.
- ATF+4 for the transfer case and manual transmission.
- A hand pump to push gear oil and ATF up into side fill holes, such as a fluid transfer hand pump that threads onto quart bottles.
Check the current price on Amazon before you buy, and match each bottle's spec to the table rather than the brand name alone.
Jeep Wrangler JL fluid FAQ
How much oil does a 2.0L turbo JL take?
5 quarts (4.73 L) with the filter, in every manual from 2018 to 2026. Use SAE 5W-30 full synthetic; the 2021 and later manuals ask for API SP/GF-6A.
Does the 4xe take the same oil as the regular 2.0L?
Yes. The 2024 and 2026 manuals list one 2.0L engine oil figure, 5 quarts, and the 4xe uses the 2.0L engine. The 4xe's extra coolant loops (5.6 and 5.7 quarts) are marked for dealer service.
How much oil does a Wrangler 392 take?
7.5 quarts (7.1 L) of SAE 0W-40 full synthetic with the filter, per the 2024 and 2026 manuals. Its cooling system holds 15.6 quarts.
Can I use 75W-90 or 80W-90 in my JL axles?
Jeep doesn't list either. The front axle takes 75W-85 GL-5; the rear takes 75W-85 on the M220 or 75W-140 on the M200 in the 2021 and later manuals. Stick with the grade for your axle code.
What size is the JL fuel tank?
21.5 gallons on 4-door gas models and 17.5 gallons on 2-doors in the 2021 and later manuals. The 4xe has a 17.2-gallon tank and the 2021 diesel an 18.3-gallon tank.
