Jeep Wrangler Cruise Control Not Working: Causes and Fixes
Last updated on October 26th, 2026 at 08:14 pm
Wrangler cruise control usually quits for one of four reasons: the brake switch is sending a bad signal, the Jeep is deliberately canceling it, a fuse or steering wheel control has failed, or an ABS or stability fault is active. Check your brake lights and the dash first, then scan for codes.
Many “failures” are normal behavior. On the 2023 JL, cruise only works above 20 mph, and ABS or stability control activating cancels it. Older JK Wranglers can need more speed: the 2008 Wrangler (JK) owner’s manual gives 35 mph.
Quick diagnosis: symptom, cause and first check
| What you notice | Most likely cause | First check (free first) |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise light never comes on, buttons do nothing | Fuse, wheel control wiring or clockspring | Horn and other wheel controls; cruise fuse (2023 JL: F89, 10 A) |
| Light comes on, SET does nothing | Speed too low, wrong gear, parking brake, 4 Low | Hold a steady speed above 20 mph (JL) and try again |
| Sets, then cancels on its own | ABS or stability event, brake switch, speed signal | Brake lights with a helper; ABS/ESC lights; scan codes |
| Brake lights stay on or never light | Brake pedal switch | Look at the lights; check recalls for your VIN (2017: 18V098) |
| ABS, ESC or traction light on | Wheel speed sensor or stability system fault | Scan ABS codes; inspect sensor wiring after mud or water |
| Cruise Fault light on | System fault the Jeep has stored | Dealer or capable shop scan (the manual says service is required) |
| Cruise acts up after bigger tires or new gears | Speed signal no longer matches the speedometer | Compare GPS speed to the speedometer; recalibrate |
Treat the table as a starting map. Wranglers from 2007 to 2018 (JK) and 2018 on (JL) share most failure points, but the activation speed and fuse locations differ by generation.
Fuse charts change by year, so always confirm in your own manual. The one fuse number quoted here comes from the 2023 JL chart.
Check it in this order

Free checks come first because most cruise problems are a switch, a condition or a fuse. A helper, a flashlight and your owner’s manual cover the first four steps.
A basic OBD-II reader helps with step one and two. Code P0571 means the brake switch “A” circuit, which also controls the brake lights, so a stuck or failing switch shows up there first.
What is your Wrangler doing? Symptom checker
Based on the 2023 JL and 2008 JK owner’s manuals, NHTSA recalls and the tables on this page. It narrows your first checks; it does not read codes.
Checks are ordered free first and dealer last, the same order as the flowchart. If the first two suggestions do not fix it, move to the next numbered check.
For tire and gear changes, the tire size calculator shows how far your speedometer is off, and the regear calculator covers axle ratios.
When the Jeep cancels cruise on purpose

Jeep’s manual says cruise can be dangerous where it cannot hold a constant speed. It tells you not to use it in heavy traffic or on winding, icy, snow-covered or slippery roads.
That is why a Wrangler that drops cruise on a wet or gravel road is working as designed. Nothing is broken unless it also cancels on dry pavement.
| Condition | What the 2023 JL manual says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Cruise takes over above 20 mph (32 km/h); SET and RES work above 20 mph | Reach speed first, then press SET |
| Brake | Tapping the pedal or normal braking cancels but keeps the set speed | Press RES above 20 mph |
| ABS or stability | ABS activation or ESC/traction control activation cancels cruise | Slow down; do not use cruise on loose surfaces |
| Parking brake, gear | Parking brake applied or selector out of DRIVE cancels | Release the brake; stay in DRIVE |
| Manual transmission | Clutch pedal or low RPM cancels; ACC cannot be set below 20 mph or in first | Use a higher gear |
| On/off or ignition off | Erases the set speed from memory | Turn on and SET again |
| 4 Low, ESC Full Off, Off Road+ | Listed as conditions where adaptive cruise (ACC) cannot be engaged; the manual does not say they block fixed-speed cruise | Use 4 High and normal ESC for road cruising |
If you still see a Cruise Fault light after clearing those conditions, the fault is real. The manual tells you to have an authorized dealer service it.
Mud and water crossings also trip ABS faults. Our guide to Jeep problems after mud or water covers sensors and brakes after a trail day.
1. Faulty or sticking brake pedal switch

The brake switch tells the engine computer when you press the pedal and also turns on the brake lights. Cruise drops out when it sees a brake signal, so a switch that flickers or sticks makes cruise quit or refuse to set.
RepairPal lists P0571 (brake switch “A” circuit) with causes of switch failure, wiring or a control module. Check the plunger, connector and wiring before buying parts.
Check recalls first. NHTSA campaign 18V098 covered certain 2017 Wranglers whose brake switches could keep the brake lights on. Dealers replace the switch free.
2. Blown cruise fuse

On the 2023 JL, fuse F89 (10 A micro fuse) feeds the steering column control module, cruise control, instrument display and airbag disable lamp, according to the manual’s power distribution center chart. It sits in the engine compartment near the battery.
Pull the fuse and look at the element inside the blade. A test light or multimeter confirms it. Use the same amperage only.
The manual says to see a dealer if the replacement blows again. For a JK, read the chart in your own manual, since numbers differ by year.
3. ABS, stability control or wheel speed sensor faults
The JL cancels cruise when ABS or stability control activates, and the ABS or ESC lights often mean cruise will not set. After off-roading, a damaged sensor or wire is the usual suspect, though Jeep’s manual does not say so; scan before replacing anything.
Scan ABS codes, inspect each sensor and its wiring, and read our guide on the Wrangler ABS light for what to do next. RepairPal quotes wheel speed sensor replacement at $99 to $145 as a national average.
4. Steering wheel switches or clockspring

If the horn, other wheel buttons and the airbag light also misbehave, the problem is probably in the steering column, not the cruise system. The fuse chart groups cruise with the steering column control module, which fits that pattern.
Clocksprings carry the airbag circuit. Jeep recalls for dust-contaminated clocksprings (below) cover that airbag circuit. Leave airbag-area work to a dealer or shop.
5. Speed signal and tire or gear changes

Cruise holds the speed the computer thinks you are doing. If the speedometer jumps, drops to zero or reads wrong after a tire or gear change, cruise will cancel or hunt.
The 2023 JL manual says tire size and suspension changes affect adaptive cruise performance. Compare GPS speed to the speedometer and recalibrate when they disagree.
6. Engine or throttle faults
A lit check engine light with stored throttle, pedal or engine codes can leave cruise unavailable. Read the codes, then see our guide to a bad throttle position sensor on a Jeep.
RepairPal lists throttle position sensor replacement at $98 to $143 as a national average. Do not clean or replace parts until codes point there.
JK vs JL: what the manuals say
| Item | 2007–2018 JK | 2018+ JL |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum cruise speed | 35 mph (56 km/h), 2008 manual | 20 mph (32 km/h), 2023 manual |
| Cruise fuse | Not verified here; use your manual’s chart | F89, 10 A micro fuse, power distribution center (2023) |
| Cancel list | Not reproduced here; see your manual | Brake, CANC, ABS, ESC/TCS, parking brake, out of DRIVE, overheated brakes |
| Adaptive cruise option | Not in the 2008 manual | Offered; fixed-speed cruise still works if ACC shows unavailable |
| Fault warning | Check dash and codes | Cruise Control Fault light: service required |
Years between 2008 and 2018 may differ from both columns. Your own owner’s manual is the final word for your VIN.
If you see a speed or fuse number elsewhere without a source and year, treat it as unconfirmed.
| NHTSA no. | Models | Problem | Remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18V098 | 2017 Wrangler (and Dodge Caravan) | Brake switch may keep brake lights on or allow shifting out of PARK without the pedal | Dealer replaces brake switches free; recall began Mar 22, 2018 |
| 16V290 | 2007–2010 Wrangler JK built Mar 2, 2006–Aug 13, 2010 | Clockspring dust may break the airbag circuit | Dealer replaces clockspring, wheel back cover and column shroud free; began Dec 14, 2016 |
| 24V199 | 2023–2024 Wrangler (among other Stellantis models) | Steering column control module may not be welded properly; airbag may not deploy | Dealer inspects and replaces the module as needed, free |
A recall repair costs nothing, so check your VIN before paying for a brake switch or clockspring.
These recalls do not mention cruise control. They matter because the parts are on the same circuits or the same pedal and column.
What it costs
| Item | Third-party estimate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise control inspection (Wrangler JK) | About $95 average; for a 2018 JK 3.6L, a $115 estimate and $125–$132 shop/dealer price | YourMechanic |
| Cruise control switch replacement | $97–$143 national average | RepairPal |
| Wheel speed sensor replacement | $99–$145 national average | RepairPal |
| Throttle position sensor replacement | $98–$143 national average | RepairPal |
| Brake switch or clockspring under recall | Free at a dealer | NHTSA |
Prices vary with labor rates and parts. Ask for a written estimate first.
A fuse costs a few dollars, but diagnosis time is what usually adds up.
Use cruise control safely
- Turn the system off when you are not using it. The manual warns it is dangerous to leave it on.
- Do not use it on wet, icy, snow-covered, winding or slippery roads, or in heavy traffic.
- Disengage if you tow and speed drops more than 10 mph on hills. The manual also says not to use it in hilly terrain or with heavy loads.
- Adaptive cruise is a convenience system, not a collision avoidance system.
When to see a dealer
See a dealer if the Cruise Control Fault light is on, if airbag or ABS lights are on, if a fuse keeps blowing, or if the scan shows no clear cause. They can read module data, check software updates and look up open recalls by VIN.
The manual also says to contact an authorized dealer if a replaced fuse blows again.
FAQs
The 2023 JL manual says ABS activation, stability or traction control activation, a brake tap, the parking brake or leaving DRIVE cancels cruise. On slippery or bumpy roads that is normal. If it happens on dry pavement, check the brake switch and wheel speed signal.
Yes. The brake switch signals the computer when you press the pedal, and a faulty signal (code P0571) can stop cruise from engaging or cancel it. Check that the brake lights work and check recalls for your VIN.
The 2023 JL manual says cruise takes over above 20 mph (32 km/h). The 2008 JK manual says 35 mph (56 km/h). Check your own manual for other years.
On the 2023 JL it is F89, a 10 A micro fuse in the power distribution center near the battery, shared with the steering column control module. Other years differ, so use your owner’s manual chart.
