If your Jeep says Key Fob Not Detected, press and hold the brake, touch the nose of the fob (the end opposite the emergency key) to the ENGINE START/STOP button, and push the button with the fob. Stellantis' 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) User's Guide gives this as the backup when the fob battery is low or dead. If the engine starts, replace the fob battery. If it doesn't, work down the checks below: spare fob, interference, the 12-volt battery, the key-system fuse, then a dealer scan.

How to start a Jeep when the fob is not detected

  1. Open the door with the emergency key. The key slides out of the fob when you push its release button.
  2. Sit in the driver's seat with the fob in your hand and press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Touch the nose of the fob (the side opposite the emergency key) to the ENGINE START/STOP button.
  4. Push the button with the fob. If the Jeep does not start, the guide says the starter disengages by itself after 10 seconds, so release and think about the next check instead of cranking again and again.

The guide does not explain how the Jeep reads a fob with a dead battery, only that this is the backup method. It works only with a fob that is programmed to that vehicle.

A start with the backup method points at the fob battery or its transmitter, not at the Jeep. A Jeep that also refuses the backup start has a different problem, and the table below sorts the likely causes.

Keep the Jeep in PARK or NEUTRAL while you try, as for any push-button start. If nothing happens after one clean try with each fob, stop and use the checks below instead of repeating the same attempt.

The check order, in one picture

Flowchart of five checks in order for a Jeep that says Key Fob Not Detected: backup start, spare fob, interference, 12-volt battery, key-system fuse

Each step is cheaper and quicker than the one after it. Stop at the first step that fixes it, because a fob battery costs a few dollars and a dealer scan costs shop time.

The fuse in step 5 is verified only for the 2018 and newer Wrangler. For other Jeeps, use the fuse chart in your own owner's manual.

Key fob checker: what to check for your symptom

Based on the Stellantis 2018 Wrangler JL User's Guide, Stellantis TSB 08-169-24 Rev. C (NHTSA) and the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 owner's manual cited above. It orders free checks first and dealer-only work last.

The seven checks in detail

1. Fob battery

A low fob battery is the most common reason for the message. Stellantis' 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) User's Guide says a low battery can show as a message in the instrument cluster or as a fob LED that no longer lights when you press a button. The guide also notes that Passive Entry does not work if the fob battery is dead.

Stellantis' 2022 Ram 2500/3500 owner's manual says the fob uses one CR2032 and should last about three years in normal use. That is a Ram manual, so match the number printed on the cell inside your Jeep fob instead of assuming. The replacement steps are below.

2. Spare fob test

Hold the spare fob to the button the same way. If the spare starts the Jeep normally and the main fob doesn't, the Jeep is fine. Open the main fob and look for a corroded battery contact, a cracked case or water inside.

3. Interference

Stellantis' 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) User's Guide warns that a fob next to a mobile phone, laptop or other electronic device may not be detected, because those devices can block its wireless signal. Take the fob out of the pocket with your phone and try again.

Keyless entry (the fob buttons) reaches about 66 ft (20 m) in the guide, but Passive Entry at the door handle needs the fob within 5 ft (1.5 m), and the push-button ignition needs the fob inside the passenger compartment. A fob left on the roof, in the bed or hanging from a trail pack outside the cabin will not start the Jeep.

4. The 12-volt battery

A weak battery makes the Jeep's electronics act up well before it fails to crank, and modules can report faults that look like a fob problem. If the engine cranks slowly, the dash lights dim or several warnings appear at once, charge the battery and have it load-tested before you buy a fob.

Some Jeeps also carry a second battery. Our guide on whether a Wrangler has two batteries explains which ones, and a Jeep that shuts off and won’t restart points to the same electrical checks.

5. Key-system fuse

On the 2018 Wrangler JL, Stellantis' 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) User's Guide puts the Power Distribution Center in the engine compartment near the battery. Fuse F10 is a 15 amp blue micro fuse for the Key Ignition Node (KIN), the Radio Frequency Hub (RF Hub) and the Electric Steering Column Lock.

Turn the ignition off, pull the fuse and look for a broken element. Replace it only with the same amp rating. The guide says that if a replaced fuse blows again, you should contact an authorized dealer.

6. Fob programming

Stellantis' 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) User's Guide says only key fobs programmed to the vehicle can start and operate it, and that duplicate fobs are made at an authorized dealer by programming a blank fob to the vehicle. When the Sentry Key Immobilizer system is serviced, bring all your keys with you.

A used fob from a salvage yard or an online listing usually has not been programmed to your VIN, so ask the dealer before you pay for one.

7. RF Hub software and dealer scan

If the fob, battery and fuse are all fine, the Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) is next. Stellantis TSB 08-169-24 Rev. C on NHTSA covers 2024 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models built on or before May 13, 2024. The symptoms include a vehicle that won't start unless the fob is pressed to the Keyless Ignition Node and a key fob not detected when inside the vehicle.

Dealers use this bulletin when the vehicle shows a check-engine light plus code B1A10-00, B1A11-00 (RKE fob 1 or 2 battery low) or B23D7-14. The repair is a software update to the RFHM, and the bulletin says the RFHM should never be replaced for this issue. It lists 0.2 to 0.4 hours of labor, reimbursable within the provisions of warranty.

That bulletin names only the 2024 WL. If you drive a different model or year, you can still ask a dealer to scan the keyless system and check whether any software update applies to your VIN.

How to replace a Jeep key fob battery

Stellantis' 2022 Ram 2500/3500 owner's manual describes the same coin-cell job as most Jeep fobs. Jeep fob designs vary, so use these steps as a guide and follow your own manual for where to pry.

  1. Press the release on the fob and slide out the emergency key.
  2. Pry the back cover open at the small gap along the edge, then lift it off.
  3. Slide out the old battery and note which side faces up.
  4. Hold the new battery by its edges. Skin oil can shorten its life, so wipe it with rubbing alcohol if you touched the flat faces.
  5. Slide the new battery under the small lip, snap the cover closed and reinsert the emergency key until it locks.
  6. Test the fob buttons, then start the Jeep normally.

Coin cells are a swallowing hazard. The Ram manual warns that a swallowed battery can cause severe internal burns within about two hours, so keep new and old cells away from children. For a spare, CR2032 coin cell batteries on Amazon are a common size, but check the number printed on your old cell first. A digital multimeter on Amazon also helps when you test the 12-volt battery.

When to stop and see a dealer

  • The Jeep refuses the backup start with a new fob battery and a good 12-volt battery.
  • A replaced key-system fuse blows again.
  • Both fobs fail everywhere, or the message comes and goes with no pattern.
  • You need a new fob, a used fob or any keyless module replaced. All need dealer programming.
  • A 2024 Grand Cherokee shows a check-engine light with the fob battery codes above.

If the message is joined by an anti-theft or security light, see our guides on getting a Jeep out of anti-theft mode and a flashing security light. Our free printable checklists also include a Jeep no-start quick fix to keep in the glove box.

FAQs

Why does my Jeep say Key Fob Not Detected?

A low fob battery is the most common cause. Interference from a phone or laptop, a damaged or unprogrammed fob, a weak 12-volt battery, a key-system fuse or the RF Hub can also cause it. Try the backup start and the spare fob first.

How do I start a Jeep with a dead key fob?

Press and hold the brake, touch the nose of the fob (opposite the emergency key) to the ENGINE START/STOP button and push the button with the fob.

What battery does a Jeep key fob use?

It depends on the fob. Stellantis lists one CR2032 for the Ram fob in its 2022 manual. Open your fob and match the number printed on the old battery.

Can I program a Jeep key fob myself?

Stellantis says fobs are duplicated at an authorized dealer, which programs a blank fob to the vehicle electronics.
