Jeep Cherokee transfer case problems depend on the generation. The 1984–2001 XJ has a true transfer case, usually the part-time NV/NP231 Command-Trac, and most of its trouble is shift linkage, low fluid, leaking seals and 4WD used on dry pavement. The 2014–2023 KL has a power transfer unit (PTU) instead, and it is under four NHTSA recalls, so check your VIN before anything else.

Below, each problem is ordered the way a mechanic checks it, free checks first. The numbers come from NHTSA’s recall database, the 2018 Cherokee owner’s manual (FCA PDF) and Jeep’s description of the NV231 Command-Trac. Anything those sources do not give, such as fluid type and torque for the XJ, is left to your own manual or a shop.

The XJ and KL share a name and almost nothing else underneath. The XJ sends power to both axles through a gear-and-chain transfer case behind the transmission, and you pick the mode with a lever.

The KL sends power to the rear through a PTU bolted to the transmission and a rear drive module. The 2018 Cherokee owner’s manual (FCA PDF) describes the one-speed system as on-demand and the two-speed system as having 4WD Low.

Cherokee 4WD checker

The checker only repeats the NHTSA recall records, the owner’s manual and the Jeep NV231 page. It cannot read codes or inspect the vehicle, and a recall listing means “certain vehicles,” so your VIN decides.

Use nhtsa.gov/recalls with the 17-character VIN from the dash or door jamb. Recall repairs are free at a Jeep dealer.

Diagnose in this order

Start at the top of your column and stop at the first step that explains the problem. The first three steps cost nothing but time.

If the symptom is a loss of drive or Park not holding, skip the chart. Stop, set the parking brake and call a dealer.

KL Cherokee (2014–2023): PTU recalls and Service 4WD

NHTSA lists four recalls for the Cherokee PTU between 2020 and 2026. The records describe a PTU that can fail or disengage the transmission from the differential, with a loss of drive power and, in the records, a loss of the Park function or rollaway.

That is why Park alone is not enough on a recalled Cherokee. Set the electric parking brake when you stop, and do not ignore a Service 4WD message.

If your Cherokee is a 2019–2023, the open recall may not have a final repair yet. Ask the dealer for the current status and keep the owner letter.

Service 4WD light

The owner’s manual says that if the light stays on or comes on while driving, the 4WD system is not working properly and needs service. It tells you to drive to the nearest service center and have it serviced immediately.

Free first: run the VIN recall check. After that, a dealer scan is the next step, because the manual lists no owner repair for this light.

What an owner can check for free

  1. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and note any open campaign.
  2. Confirm all four tires are the same size and type. The manual says unequal sizes may cause PTU failure, and the free tire size calculator shows how far two sizes differ.
  3. For 4WD Low, stop or roll at 0 to 3 mph, shift to Neutral and press the 4WD Low button once. The manual says several attempts may be needed, and the cluster shows a message if a condition is missing.
  4. After driving through deep water, inspect the engine, transmission, PTU and rear drive module fluids. The manual says milky or foamy fluid should be flushed or changed as soon as possible.

Keep 4WD Low under 25 mph, and only on loose or slippery surfaces. The manual warns that low range on dry hard pavement can increase tire wear and damage driveline parts.

For flat towing, the manual allows it only with a two-speed PTU shifted to Neutral and with the Mopar flat-tow wiring kit. One-speed 4x4 models must be towed with all four wheels off the ground. The difference between the systems is also covered in our 4WD vs AWD vs 4A guide.

XJ Cherokee (1984–2001): transfer case problems

The XJ’s common Command-Trac is the NV/NP231, which Jeep’s description of the NV231 Command-Trac calls a part-time, shift-on-the-fly system. NHTSA’s recall lookup shows no transfer case recall for 1990–2001 Cherokees, so XJ problems are wear and use problems.

This page does not give XJ fluid type, capacity or torque values. The 1984–2001 factory manual could not be opened for this rewrite, and a forum number is not good enough for a drivetrain part. Use your manual or a Jeep shop.

Binding or hopping on dry pavement

Part-time 4WD locks the front and rear shafts together. Jeep says 4Hi is for wet or snow-covered pavement, sand and gravel, and only for slippery or loose surfaces.

Shift from 2Hi to 4Hi at speeds up to 55 mph. For 4Lo, slow to 2–3 mph and shift to Neutral, then into 4Lo. If it binds in a turn on dry road, you are in the wrong mode.

Will not shift fully into 4Hi or 4Lo

With the Jeep stopped, look at the shift linkage under the vehicle. A bent rod or loose bushing keeps the lever from moving the case all the way into position.

If the linkage moves freely and the case still will not go, the problem is inside the case. That is a shop job.

Leaks, noise and a cracked case

Look for wet seams and drips around the shaft seals, then pull the fill plug to check level and condition. A growl or whine that continues after a fluid check means internal wear.

A case that has hit a rock can crack and lose fluid fast. A Cherokee XJ skid plate protects it on the trail. On a KL, a basic OBD2 scanner reads generic codes, though the 4WD modules may need a dealer tool.

When to stop driving

Grinding, heavy fluid loss, repeated 4WD warnings or any loss of drive means stop. NHTSA lists loss of drive power and unintended rollaway as the consequences in all four PTU recalls.

If a Cherokee will not move in gear, the Grand Cherokee won’t-move-in-gear guide lists the checks. For a related older 4WD case, see the 2005 Grand Cherokee transfer case guide. Other tools are on the calculators page.

FAQs

Does the 2014+ Jeep Cherokee have a transfer case?

Not a traditional one. The KL uses a power transfer unit at the front and a rear drive module. Two-speed models also have 4WD Low.

Is the Cherokee PTU recalled?

Yes. NHTSA lists 20V-343, 23V-302, 25V-011 and 26V-290, covering certain 2014–2023 Cherokees. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What does Service 4WD mean on a Cherokee?

The owner’s manual says the 4WD system is not functioning properly and needs service. Drive to a service center and have it serviced immediately.

Why does my XJ bind when turning in 4WD?

Part-time 4WD locks the front and rear shafts together, so it binds on dry pavement. Use 2Hi on dry roads.
